Child care in ayurveda starts before a woman conceives a child and lasts till a few years after child birth. Ayurveda system of medicine aims at providing a most nurturing environment both for the mother and child during and after pregnancy. Even before conceiving, the parents should take care to ensure the health and vitality of their offspring by following healthy lifestyles, having nutritional meals and being ethical and compassionate towards others. The partners may use herbs like Ashwagandha and Shatavaree to strengthen their reproductive fluids, hormones and organs to create healthy children. Poor diet, too much or too little exercise, stress and overwork will lead to the imbalance of doshas and ill health.
By the end of the third month, the fetus starts to show distinct development and sensory perceptions. It is also the time when heart beats can be heard.
The formation of tissues in the fetus takes place in the fourth month. Blood and muscles form in the fifth month. By the sixth and seventh months fetal organs are formed and these acquire strength. Skin and hair are noticeable at this stage.
The baby is also given proper massages and special baths to open up the pores of the skin, strengthen the immunity system and for having a better complexion.
Above all, it is imperative that the child be given all the warmth and affection during the early periods of the child hood. Brest milk is termed nectar in ayurveda and there is no substitute for brest milk. Brest milk is a whole and complete food and the baby should be fed with mother’s milk as long as possible. And, apart from satisfying the physical needs of the child, brest milk cements the bond between the mother and child.
The child can be given wholesome food from the sixth month onwards. It is important to note that the food given to the child at this stage will help to balance the vata, pita and kapha energies and guarantee good health in future. Barley powder can also be given to the child. The child should also be given massage daily for six weeks with warm sesame oil.
Ayurveda system of medicine recommends the consumption by the mother of such herbs as brahmi and pennel as these are considered memory boosters and stimulants. The modern allopathic system of medicine also corroborates this claim.
