Eye
disorders are well documented in the various Ayurveda texts written
thousands of years ago. Eye disorders also find a passing mention in
the Shalakyatantra that deals with all disorders relating to the eye,
ear, nose, throat and diseases of the head and neck. However, in the
well known ayurveda treatise called Shusurta Samhita the anatomy and
physiology of the eye and all eye disorders have been dealt in detail.
It has stated that the shape of the eyes is oblong and not a perfect
round. It has besides, mentioned that the thickness of the eyeball is
similar to the thickness of one's own thumb. Shusruta samhita has also
mentioned that the eye has different layers, various junctions, the
pupil, lense, eyelids, eye lashes etc. Shushruta samhita also mentions
about the clinical application of this anatomical background in the
chapters dealing with the classification of the eye disorders.
The Ayurveda system of medicine has effective and suitable treatments
for every type of eye disorders. Though the treatments suggested were
written thousands of years ago they are still valid and highly effective.
